The Plitvice Park, Croatia's most popular tourist attraction,
was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Just a two-hour drive from
Zagreb, the national park offers 50 acres of forest and lake. Plitvice lakes
are recognized as an astonishing natural
monument for the benefit and enjoyment of the people now and for the
generations to come. Today, 60 years after its establishment, Plitvice National Park continues to provide
inspiration for visitors becoming nowadays one of Croatia's biggest
attractions.
Plitvicka
jezera as it sounds on national language, is composed of sixteen
interlocking lakes that are generally visited in two groups: the Upper lakes and the Lower lakes. The
lakes are supplied with water from three rivers called the Crna and Bijela
(Black and White) rivers and the Rjecica. The largest of the rivers is the
Black River. A number of subterranean sources also feed the lakes as well as a
web of aboveground brooks, tributaries and springs. After tumbling over
waterfalls the lake waters flow in the Korana river. Such magnificent plitvice waterfalls must be seen.
The Plitvice lakes area boasts a large variety
of interesting and colorful flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy walking and
hiking the many pathways and trails, or exploring the lakes by boat. The park
is surrounded by the mountains Plješevica, Mala Kapela, and Medveđak, which
are part of the Dinaric Alps. The 16 blue-green
Plitvice Lakes, which are separated by natural dams of travertine, are
situated on the Plitvice plateau.
